What is windows operating system
What is windows Windows is an operating system that functions as the operating system for computers. A computer will not even start without the Windows operating system. The Windows operating system was created by the IT company Microsoft Corporation. This operating system is considered one of the best operating systems for computers. Currently, most people use this operating system for their computers because its interface is better than previous operating systems. Therefore, it is the most popular operating system at present.
Before Windows operating systems came to computers, the MS-DOS operating system (Command Line Interface) was used. This operating system didn’t have graphical software; instead, it used MS-DOS commands, which were given through coding, and the results were displayed. However, remembering all the commands was difficult, and to solve this problem, Microsoft invented the Windows operating system. The first Windows operating system, Windows 1.0, was launched by Microsoft in 1985. Through continuous updates and improvements, we now use Windows 11, which is superior to all previous versions of Windows.
The word “window” means “khidki” in Hindi. This operating system was named Windows because when you open any software on a Windows computer’s desktop, a rectangular interface opens, which looks like a rectangular graphic, similar to a window, making it easy to understand and navigate.
Feature of window operating system
The GUI (Graphical User Interface)
Graphical User Interface was not initially a feature of computers, but it was introduced with the advent of Windows. The GUI made using computers much easier for users. This feature allows everything on the computer’s desktop to be clearly visible. If someone wants to do something on the computer, they don’t need to use coding; instead, the icons and interface are readily available on the desktop. Users can simply click on these icons to access the desired programs, such as MS Excel, MS Word, and other software.
Multitasking
This feature allows you to perform multiple tasks simultaneously on your computer desktop. For example, if you are working on something in one software program, you can minimize that program and place it in a corner of the desktop, then open another software program and switch to it. In this way, you can have several software programs open on your desktop at the same time.
Use of mouse
Before Windows, there was no mouse; computers at that time only had keyboards. Therefore, initially, people used coding to access software. However, with the advent of the mouse, coding became unnecessary. Now, to access any software, you can simply use the mouse to click on the software’s icon.
Software Availability
The Windows operating system offers access to a wider range of software applications, making it superior to other operating systems, and this is one of the reasons why Windows has a larger user base. The Windows operating system supports all types of software.
Disadvantages of windows
- Cost The Windows operating system is not free; it requires a license, and some software is not free either and requires a premium payment.
- Security Windows does not provide as good security as other operating systems. Hackers can easily compromise the Windows operating system, which is why Windows is more susceptible to hacker attacks.
- Virus attack Compared to other operating systems, Microsoft Windows is more vulnerable to viruses, so users always have to rely on anti-virus software.
- Rebooting The Windows operating system needs to be rebooted or refreshed periodically; otherwise, the system will freeze and stop working.
History of windows
Microsoft announced the Windows operating system back in 1981 and also stated that it would be a GUI (Graphical User Interface) system.
Then, in 1983, Bill Gates announced the Windows operating system, and finally, on November 20, 1985, the first version of Windows was released to the market. This was the first version of Windows, version 1.0.
Subsequently, various versions of the Windows operating system were gradually launched, with Windows XP being the most popular. Currently, the latest version of Windows, Windows 11, is available, which was recently launched in 2021. Among the many Windows versions, Windows 7 and Windows 10 were particularly popular.
