Window 10 operating system We already know that Windows is the most widely used operating system that runs on a computer. Now we will learn more about Windows and its uses. Let us first learn about what is an operating system.

 

OPERATING SYSTEM

Operating system is a software that enables computer to understand the computer components commands given by the user. Operating system works as an interface between the computer hardware and the user. Common operating systems are Windows, MacOS, Linux, etc.

 

FUNCTIONS OF OPERATING SYSTEM

GUI. Device Drivers. Security. Networking. Disk Managem ent (File Systems) Memory Management. Process Management. Operating System.

Operating system controls all parts of a computer system and enables them to work properly.

Operating system also controls the storage operations, i.e., how data or files are stored into the computer system.

Operating system is known as the mastermind of the computer system and performs many functions which let the computer work efficiently.

 

Window 10

Windows 10 is a latest Microsoft Windows Operating System that was released on July 29, 2015. It is the successor of Windows 8.1. Windows 10 is a GUI (Graphical User Interface) based operating system in which pictures, images, icons, and menus are used to give commands. One of the primary aims of Windows 10 is to unify the Windows experience across multiple devices, such as, desktop computers, tablets, and smartphones.

 

STARTING WINDOWS 10

When we Turn ON computer, Windows 10 starts automatically and a windows lock screen appears. In the lock screen, type the password and press the Enter key from the keyboard. After some time, we will get the final windows screen.

 

COMPONENTS OF WINDOWS

Desktop

When we switch ON a computer, Windows start automatically. The first screen that appears with a labelled picture on it, is called desktop.

 

Taskbar

Taskbar is a long horizontal bar at the bottom of the desktop. It allows us to locate and launch programs through Start and the Start menu, or view any program that’s currently open. On the right side of the taskbar is the Notification Area that allows you to check the date and time, items running in the background. The Show Desktop button is present on the extreme right of the taskbar. Click on this button to minimize all the open windows and view the desktop.

 

File Explorer

We use the File Explorer to manage our files and folders. To open File Explorer, click the File Explorer icon on the taskbar or double-click any folder on the desktop.

 

Search Box

To search for something on the computer, like a specific file or application-click in the Search Box, then start typing.

 

CUSTOMIZING THE START MENU

We can customize the Start menu to suit our needs.

Rearranging Tiles

If we don’t like the way our tiles are arranged on the Start menu, we can rearrange them. To move a tile, simply click and drag it to the desired location. In this example, we are moving the Microsoft Edge tile.

To make a tile bigger or smaller, right-click the tile, select Resize, then choose the desired size.

 

Pinning and Unpinning Tiles

If we want to add a tile to the Start menu, we can pin it. We can also unpin tiles we don’t use very often. To do this, follow the given steps:

  • Step1: Click the Start button, then open the Allapps.
  • Step 2: Find and right-click the desired app, then select Pin to Start. In this example, we are pinning the Calendar app.
  • Step 3: The app will be pinned to the Start menu. We can remove any tile by right clicking, then selecting Unpin from Start.

 

 

Working on desktop screen

Opening Icons on Desktop

To open an icon on desktop, follow the given steps: Double-click on the icon that we desire to open. or

Right-click on the icon, select Open option. The application window will op

 

Moving Icons on Desktop

We can move an icon anywhere on the desktop. To do this, follow the given steps:

  • Step 1: Click and hold the mouse button on the icon we want to move.
  • Step 2: Drag the icon anywhere on the desktop.
  • Step 3: Release the mouse button. After releasing the mouse button, the icon will appear at the new place on the desktop.

 

Arranging Icons on Desktop

As we arrange our study desk to make it tidy, likewise we can arrange the icons on the desktop to give it a better look. To do this, follow the given steps:

  • Step 1: Right-click on the blank desktop area. A menu will appear.
  • Step 2: Click on View button. A pop-up menu appears.
  • Step 3: Click on Auto arrange icons. All the icons will be arranged on the desktop

 

Sorting the Icons

We can arrange the icons in alphabetical order on the desktop. To do this, follow the given steps:

  • Step1: Right-click on the desktop area. A menu will appear.
  • Step 2: Point to the Sort by option and click on the Name sub-option.All the icons will be arranged in alphabetical order.

 

Setting Wallpaper

We can change the appearance of the desktop background according to our choice. To do this, follow the given steps:

  • Step1 Right-click on desktop and a menu will appear.
  • Step2: Click on Personalize option.
  • Step 3: Now click on Background.
  • Step 4: Select the wallpaper from the displayed option.
  • Step 5: Click on Close button to close the window. The selected picture is displayed as the new desktop background.

 

RESTARTING THE COMPUTER

Restarting the computer means it shuts down and starts up again immediately. If our computer is not operating properly, we can restart our computer to try to fix the problem. To do this, follow the given steps:

  • Step 1: Click on Start button. The Start menu appears.
  • Step 2: Click on Power button. A menu appears.
  • Step3: Click on Restart to shut down and then start up our computer again immediately

 

SHUTTING DOWN THE COMPUTER

After completing our work, we need to shut down our computer. To shut down

  • Step 1: Click on Start button (Start menu appears).
  • Step 2: Click on lower button (a meniu appears).
  • Step3: Click on Shut down to Turn OFF the computer.
